An assessment of duplexing methods for the radio links of personal communication systems

Personal communications is a new area of mobile communications, and many trials are taking place to test different technologies. The paper addresses a fundamental consideration in the planning and designing of radio links for personal communications: duplexing. It provides an assessment of the relative strengths and weaknesses of frequency division duplexing and time division duplexing as they apply to spectrum considerations, radio design considerations, and radio implementation considerations. The analysis shows that frequency division duplexing is the preferred technique if spectrum is available; if small pieces of spectrum are allocated, time division duplexing is required.<<ETX>>
