How proteins find mitochondria and intramitochondrial compartments

Abstract Amino-terminal sequences of imported mitochondrial proteins can direct foreign proteins to mitochondria and into specific intramitochondrial compartments. Each ‘transport sequence' analysed so far contains a ‘matrix-targeting domain' and, if transport across the mitochondrial inner or outer membrane is to be prevented, an adjacent ‘stop-transport domain'.
