Protecting Water Quality in Distribution Systems

water distribution systems brought to light by the surveys, and to indicate what may be done to correct them and prevent similar defects in the future. The defects fall into three general groups : [ 1 ] those due to conditions around tanks, reservoirs, and wells feeding directly into water systems; [2] those due to physical, chemical, or biological changes within the pipe system; and [3] those due to illicit or accidental entry of foreign material into the system. The very few quality complaints now being received usually relate to taste, odor, color, and hardness. The term "defects," as used in this paper, includes any conditions that may result in impairment of water quality.
