On the analysis and implications of Maori verb alternations

Abstract This paper investigates certain widely-cited facts about the verbal morphology of modern Maori, the relative appropriateness of two different grammatical analyses of these facts, and the possible implications of the Maori data with respect to a number of general issues concerning the evaluation of alternative grammars and the nature and validation of linguistic analyses in general.
