Floating Car Observer is a new technique for measuring the speeds of oncoming vehicles from a moving vehicle using a special sensor module. The traffic data measured is used to generate high quality information about the current situation on the roads. After a period of four years, a prototype of the sensor module has been developed, which is characterized by excellent detection capabilities and low costs. This paper first explains the hard and software components of the sensor module and then describes the field test results. The integration of the developed sensor module into a public service vehicle of the Magdeburger Verkehrsbe-triebe GmbH is highlighted. The traffic data collected during the regular operation of the public service vehicle should improve both the quality of real-time information for public transport passengers and the internal management of disruptions
