Generalized Wronskian formula for solutions of the KdV equations: first applications

Abstract The well-known Wronskian formula for solutions of the KdV equation is generalized to include the description of various degenerate cases. As a first application we present a new derivation of the rational solutions of the KdV equation and some results concerning the behaviour of the so-called positon solutions of higher order.
