Chlorite (being a clay mineral) is one of the common minerals well developed in the sedimentary clastic rocks. It has been found that the distribution and occurrence of chlorite plays an important role in controlling and affecting the pore permeability in the reservoir. In this paper, the microscopic (characteristics) and various occurrences of chlorite are presented and its compositions, contents, chemical and physical properties, diagenetic variation and distribution in the pore of reservoir are discussed so as to understand the effect of chlorite on the protection of pores in the reservoir rocks. The research provides theoretical and practical evidences for the prediction of pore permeability and the evaluation of reservoirs in oil and gas fields.
