Capability evaluation of a sinogram error detection and correction method in computed tomography

An iterative method for detecting and correcting errors in sinograms is described and its capability is evaluated. The method is based on the use of a reconstruction-reprojection procedure to check the consistency of a sinogram. Adjustments of the sinogram are made iteratively to satisfy gradually the consistency requirement. The effectiveness of the method for detecting and correcting errors due to scanner detector problems is demonstrated with computer-simulated data and with real data from positron emission tomography. The potential usefulness of the method for quality control of scanners is discussed.<<ETX>>
