Abstract Many university courses use multiple-choice tests for assessment because they are objective and easy to administer and mark, especially for large classes. However, many such tests tend to ask for the recall of isolated pieces of information. This article proposes the use of extended matching sets type questions which can be formulated towards problem solving rather than recall. Outline instructions for writing Extended Matching Sets questions are given.
