Grain boundary studies and their technological significance

AbstractRecent advances in the study of grain boundaries are discussed. These include the effects of solute segregation and boundary structures on grain boundary motion and grain growth, boundary energy studies, field ion microscope observations, and nonequilibrium impurity segregation at boundaries. Several of the more promising theories of boundary structures and properties are considered. The general implications and technological importance of these studies are discussed in relation to the development of preferred orientations in annealed materials, grain boundary corrosion and embrittlement, and sintering. Several general approaches to problems involving boundary properties and effects, and solute segregation at boundaries, are indicated. Resume Les etudes recentes sur les joints de grains sont discutees: l'influence de la segregation des solutes et de la structure sur le mouvement des joints de grains et la croissance des grains, l' energie des joints de grains, ce qui laisse voir le microscope ioni...
