Prosodic Effects on the Interpretation of Japanese Wh-questions

In (1) the Q-marker ka appears both in the embedded clause and in the matrix clause. Ka is ambiguous between a scope-marker for a wh-phrase (a lexical realization of [+WH] COMP) and a complementizer corresponding to whether in English ([-WH] or [+YES/NO]). When the wh-phrase is licensed by the embedded Q-marker in LF, the scope of the wh-phrase is the embedded clause, resulting in an interrogative yes/no question (an embedded reading). When the wh-phrase is licensed by the matrix Q-
