A COMPETENCY-BASED SYSTEM FOR ASSESSMENT, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERS.

All civil engineering, whether it be design or construction, relies on the skills of its major resource; people. This paper describes a competency-based system which Carillion (formerly Tarmac Construction Services) has developed over the past three years to structure its approach to identifying job skill requirements and assessing employee capabilities. The system has helped the company and its engineers to identify training and development needs, measure performance and develop personal career development plans.
