Real-time wide area power control studies using PXI and RTDS

With the advances in measurement and communication, wide-area control system (WACS) is becoming a mature technology in power systems. Various control strategies have been proposed. To study the performance of these new control or protection methods for power systems, time domain simulation is widely used. One of the time domain simulation methods is controller-in-the-loop (CIL) simulation, which includes a real time simulator and an embedded controller. In this paper, a real time test bed that models a simple two-area power system with WACS was implemented. The design of WACS was performed by using small-signal analysis techniques. The synchronization technique proposed in authors' previous work was implemented to see whether it has the impact on the accuracy of the simulation.
