Reference librarians are notorious for remembering vari eties of unrelated facts. At various times such facts are used in the search for sources to answer questions. Using two very different sets of verbal protocols, three kinds of mem ory used by librarians for organizing facts are described and are identified as they are actually used in the reference process. These memory kinds are semantic, episodic, and schematic. Implications for practice, education, and fur ther research are suggested.
