Patterns of migration and movement of labour to the planned villages of North East Scotland

Abstract Planned villages were founded throughout Scotland between 1725 and 1850 and attracted a considerable amount of migration into them. It was found that various legal sources including the Particular Register of Sasines, chartulary books in solicitors’ and estate offices, and miscellaneous deeds and estate papers provided data on patterns of migration and employment of settlers in planned villages. The paper discusses the methods used to attract settlers and analyses distances migrated and the relationships of migrants.
