Modeling Complex Wells in Detailed Geologies

Modeling complex multibranch wells requires detailed treatment of fluid flow inside the wellbore and an accurate description of the fluid flow in the near-well region of the reservoir. Geostatistical packages provide high levels of detail that should be maintained in the near-well region while allowing less detail in the remainder of the reservoir to provide boundary conditions. Intelligent grid coarsening is used in reservoir regions away from the well of interest. Finer detail near the well may be retained from geological modeling. By running several geological realizations and estimating the cost of possible outcomes, the benefits and risks involved in various well designs may be assessed.
