Sensitivity of the reliability of two-area interconnected system to jointly owned units

Abstract Interconnection among utilities is established to improve the system reliability as well as to reduce cost by using cheaper resources and provide capacity assistance to each other during crisis. The joint ownership of generation, an alternative to overcome the huge investment for a large generating unit, might have significant impacts on the benefits of interconnection. In this paper, the sensitivity of the reliability of two interconnected systems (utilities) to the jointly owned unit (JOU) is investigated in an attempt to offer some guidelines, useful for the generation expansion analysis of two interconnected systems. The sensitivity analysis considers different aspects of a JOU The reliability evaluation technique used in this study is an extension of the segmentation method.
