40 Gbit/s return-to-zero transmission over 500 km of standard fiber using chirped fiber Bragg gratings with small group delay ripples

A 40 Gbit/s return-to-zero (RZ) transmission has been successfully achieved over 500 km using standard fibers (non dispersion shifted fiber, SMF) and chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBG). We fabricated CFBGs with small group delay ripples, and achieved error free transmission (BER<1/spl times/10/sup -12/) using these CFBGs for dispersion compensation.
