Stress concentration around circular holes in cylindrical shells

In this paper we shall investigate the stress distribution and the displacements in the neighbourhood of a circular hole in a cylindrical shell, subjected to some load, for example torsion or axial tension. For that purpose we determine the stresses in the shell, loaded exclusively along the hole boundary in such a way, that if the stresses that would occur in the unweakened shell are added, a free boundary is obtained. Also geometric and mixed boundary conditions are treated. The analysis is based on shallow shell theory and the shell is replaced by a spiral cylindrical shell, in which the azimuthal angle varies from — ∞ to + ∞.
