UTMS DEMONSTRATION USING INFRARED VEHICLE DETECTORS

An account is given of UTMS (Universal Traffic Management System) which controls traffic flow using a two-way infrared communication system. UTMS joins together 6 subsystems a) an integrated traffic control system, b) dynamic route guidance, c) public transport priority system, d) mobile operation system, e) environment protection management system and f) a real time traffic information system. UTMS can measure travel time and provide each driver with an optimum route. The components of the system are discussed. An evaluation of the system carried out in Yokohama in 1994 is then described. The results of the trial including a user questionnaire are discussed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 882109.
