Statistical Analysis and Software

Statistics is the science of collecting, summarizing, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting data for decision making under uncertainty. Statistics allows “learning from experience” and plays a central role in biomedical research. Statistical tools are necessary to (1) decide how data should be collected; (2) decide how the collected data should be analyzed and summarized; and (3) measure the accuracy of the data summary. This latter step is part of the inference process, where the results of the statistical analysis allow the researcher to make some general statement about a wider set of subjects. All these three basic statistical concepts (data collection, summary, and inference) are deeply embedded in any research workflow.
