A histogram approach of the azimuth angle estimation using a single vector hydrophone

With a single vector hydrophone, we can get the azimuth angle of a target. An acoustic intensity averager is often used in the vector sensor signal processing; it can effectively suppress non-coherent interference, but can not suppress coherent interference. A newer azimuth angle estimation approach based on a single vector hydrophone, which is called histogram statistical azimuth angle estimation, is put forward in this paper. The principle of the approach is shown at first. Then a simulation of the situation is given, in which there is a line-spectra coherent interference in the continuous spectra signal. The result of simulation indicates that we can effectively detect the target and estimate its azimuth angle in a coherent interference background using this approach. Finally, the result of a sea trial shows the validity of suppressing the coherent line-spectra interference.
