Corporate strategy and the environment

Abstract Organizations which have been addressing environmental challenges for some time are realizing that deeper issues are emerging. An adjustment to new government policies and new management practices may appear to be all that is required but this soon changes. If the environmental movement is to be treated not just as a threat but also as an opportunity, which it is for many businesses, then a strategic approach is essential. The implications are far reaching. In many cases they will include: establishing a new mission, re-aligning the company's value system and modifying behaviour throughout the organization. New approaches will be needed to manage the change but many familiar planning concepts and techniques may be used. The benefits will be seen in bottom line results because this is the new area for competitive advantage.
