Customized Grid Generation Codes for Benchmark Three-Dimensional Flows

Customized grid generation and coarsening codes have been developed for three-dimensional benchmark configurations as part of NASA’s Turbulence Modeling Resource website, namely, a hemisphere cylinder, and the ONERA M6 wing. The codes have been used to generate families of consistently refined nested grids with different element types. Fine grids of high density with up to 400 million degrees of freedom have been generated. These grids are for use in computing reference solutions for verification of advanced solver technologies for complex turbulent flows. This paper presents details of the grid generation and coarsening processes, describes capabilities and customized features built in the codes, and demonstrates superior grid quality metrics such as skewness and face planarity.
