The Model Cleanup

Standards for hazardous waste site cleanups may be inappropriate or inadequate to protect the public health. Civil engineers responsible for remediation decisions need to know about the populations living near a site, and the actual exposures to a chemical which may prove injurious to human health, in order to relate cleanup decisions to health. Presented here is a computer model that estimates all exposure episodes for all groups in a population, from both the site and from other sources. This is designed for civil engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative remedial programs in reducing unacceptable levels of exposure for those segments of a population most at risk.
