Abstract The heat pump is an efficient energy conversion machine which elevates the temperature of low grade heat to a useable level. Electric heat pumps are more widely used than engine-assisted (especially gas turbine) heat pumps. The latter need more research and development. This work is intended to investigate their performance and economic potential by carrying out a parametric study on evaporator temperature, condenser temperature and exhaust gas heat exchanger effectiveness, besides compressor pressure ratio and maximum cycle temperature of the turbine. The performance functions were the heat output, coefficient of performance and performance effectiveness ratio. The working fluid R22 was preferred to other fluids due to its relatively better performance, higher thermal stability and greater environmental acceptability. The gas turbine heat pump using R22 is superior in saving space, improving economy and enhancing availability of the whole installation.
