The widest range of morphological and physiological specializations of the conducting system (CS) are found in the atrial and especially in the AV junctional components. The study of these very heterogeneous tissues encounters a number of difficulties which are of importance for the interpretation of fine structural observations and which may account for some of the divergencies found between different studies.
