Applications to Image Information Retrieval

Based on the works by researchers from many different countries, this chapter describes some typical applications of the theory of Symbolic Projection to image information retrieval. The chapter discusses image database queries. An intelligent image database system (IIDS) based on the 2D string pictorial data structure is described as well. This system supports spatial reasoning, flexible image information retrieval, visualization, and traditional image database operations. The pictorial data structure based on 2D strings provides an efficient means for iconic indexing in image database systems and spatial reasoning. The chapter also presents an application of the 2D C-string to similarity retrieval, where the problem of matching images containing many objects is transformed into a problem of 2D C-string matching. Similarity retrieval, generally speaking, is an operation unique to image database systems, which has no counterpart in any other type of database system.
