ELLIPSO - Coverage optimization using elliptic orbits

The conceptual approach to designing the ELLIPSO'* mobile sate1 1 ite system (MSS) constellation is described. It is shown that constellations can be biased to satisfy subscriber geographic and time of day coverage requirements through the use of tailored elliptic orbits instead of circular orbits. The resulting constellations use fewer satellites than comparable circular orbit constellations, promoting cost savings in both satellites and launch vehicles.
