Plasma diagnostics by Langmuir probes and UV absorption

Reports on a study of the right operating conditions for a Langmuir probe in the subsonic shock wake of a rarefied argon plasma jet, generated by an arc discharge. In the first experiment, the influence of different parameters on Langmuir probe characteristics was studied, which showed that good results are obtained as long as the probe remains hot and with constant surface state. Then in a second experiment a vacuum UV absorption method yielded the Ar+ ion density and an estimation of the electron temperature values. These last results agree remarkably well with simultaneous probe measurements, and they confirm the conclusions of the first experiment.
