Performance analysis of highway cellular networks using generalised arrival and generalised service time distributions

We propose a performance analysis algorithm for accurately determining the grade of service parameters in a highway cellular network. The characteristics of vehicular mobility on a highway are of a particular nature that the classical assumptions of Poisson call arrivals and negative exponential channel holding times simply do not apply. Our proposed method employs general arrival processes and general service times to better capture the teletraffic attributes of cellular calls originated on highways. We show how typical grade of service parameters such as new call blocking, hand-off call blocking and forced termination probability may be determined under this generalised approach. We also show that our proposed method is better than classical analysis for approximating simulation results under different offered load conditions, mobility characteristics and channel reservation parameters.
