Research on Relationship between Fine Aggregate Angularity and Asphalt Mixture's Anti-Shear Ability

To compare fine aggregate angularity (FAA) of three different fine aggregates including a crushed sand, chips and a natural sand, two methods, i.e. modified Uncompacted Void Content Test and modified Sand Flow Test were carried out. Results indicate that crushed sand’s FAA is similar to chips’ and both of them are better than natural sand’s. The modified Sand Flow Test is recommended. Under normal temperature, the static Triaxial Shear Strength Tests were carried out for SMA-13s and AC-13s, which are different in fine aggregate. These mixtures were made by standardized compaction or gyratory compaction method. It is discovered that that there is a direct correlation between FAA and mixture’s anti-shear ability.
