APPLICATIONS OF GPS FOR VEHICLE CONTROL IN AN AUTOMATED HIGHWAY SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT

This paper investigates the feasibility of using Global Positioning System (GPS) for lateral and longitudinal position sensing applications in advanced vehicle control systems (AVCS) within an Automated Highway System (AHS) setting. The authors propose a method that involves the use of prestored data in the form of a road map obtained by an offline road- scan operation. The data is then used as a reference input for an AVCS equipped with a differential GPS and a dead-reckoning system for AHS driving applications.
