Modeling dynamic failure in rubber

Hyperelasticity with energy limiters is used to model high-velocity penetration in a sheet of natural rubber. Particularly, the Yeoh strain energy function is replaced with a modified expression, which sets a limit for the energy that can be accumulated during deformation. The material constants controlling failure are fitted to the tension tests. The modified strain energy function is plugged in ABAQUS for the three-dimensional explicit analysis of the edge penetration of a stiff elastic projectile into a thin sheet of the natural rubber and the time history of the failure process is tracked.
