The Early History of Ray Tracing in Acoustics

Manfred Schroeder and Bishnu Atal are behind two seminal conference presentations on room acoustics, one in 1962 and the other in 1967. In the first, computerized auralization was outlined remarkably early, long before the term auralization was introduced. In the second, a ray tracing technique in room acoustics was presented. Independently, Asbj½rn Krokstad and colleagues in Norway worked on the ray tracing technique, which lead to a journal paper in 1968. Here we describe some developments that lead up to these two breakthroughs for the use of computers in room acoustics.
