Work ow Mining : A Survey of Issues and Approaches

Many of today's information systems are driven by explicit process models. Work ow management systems, but also ERP, CRM, SCM, and B2B, are con gured on the basis of a work ow model specifying the order in which tasks need to be executed. Creating a work ow design is a complicated time-consuming process and typically there are discrepancies between the actual work ow processes and the processes as perceived by the management. To support the design of work ows, we propose the use of work ow mining. Starting point for work ow mining is a so-called \work ow log" containing information about the work ow process as it is actually being executed. In this paper, we introduce the concept of work ow mining and present a common format for work ow logs. Then we discuss the most challenging problems and present some of the work ow mining approaches available today.
