DISTRIBUTED INNOVATION IN INTEGRATED PRODUCTION SYSTEMS - THE CASE OF OFFSHORE WIND FARMS

Previous research has suggested a dichotomy of organisational practices: companies involved in autonomous or modularised innovations are argued to benefit from decentralised approaches whereas appropriation of innovation benefits is carried out most successfully within centralised organisations in case of systemic innovations. However, based on case studies of subcontractors to the Danish offshore wind turbine industry, we suggest that the most successful form of organisation also depends on the character of the industry, combined with the strategy or approach pursued by the innovative firms plays an important role for the success of different forms of organisation of innovation.
