Storage Systems for Solar Steam

Three different basic concepts (encapsulation, composite material and fins) for isothermal energy storage systems using phase change materials in the temperature range between 145 °C-305 °C have been tested and compared in lab scale experiments. The sandwich concept using fins to enhance heat transfer is considered to be the most promising concept for the design of storage systems in the MW-range intended for solarthermal power plants and process heat applications. The development of the sandwich concept is continued by experiments with storage systems operated by solar steam and increased power and capacity.
