Detection of built-up edge in turning process

Abstract This paper presents a method of built-up edge detection by means of the cutting force measurement. The generation of the built-up edge, yielding in an increase in actual rake angle, is found to correlate with the cutting force. The level and variation of cutting forces change significantly by the built-up edge formation. When comparing with that of higher cutting speed performance characterized by the disappearance of built-up edge, the cutting forces under the built-up edge formation are found to be at low level and have high degree of variation. The results suggest that the passive force is the best for built-up edge detection. Thus, the ratio of mean to standard deviation of the passive force is proposed to be used to detect the built-up edge under a wide range of cutting conditions.
