EXPERIENCE WITH PERMANENT MONITORING OF THE BRIDGES SCHIESSBERGSTRASSE AND NOETSCH

This article describes the design of the crack width, crack detection, and reflector optical fibre sensors, and chemical (corrosion cell) sensors used to continuously monitor the deterioration of the German Schiessbergstrasse and the Austrian Noetsch bridges. The data processing method used to analyze the results is also described briefly. The Schiessbergstrasse bridge is a three span reinforced concrete slab bridge, and the Noetsch bridge is the first Austrian bridge to be built with glass fibre composite prestressing tendons. Brief details of the trial loading procedures used on both bridges when setting up the sensors and the results obtained from them are presented.
