Thermodynamic excess functions of binary solutions involving a fluoroalcohol

Excess enthalpies, volumes, free energies and entropies have been obtained for binary systems of 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropan-1-ol with benzene, chloroform and methylene dichloride. The excess functions are all positive and greater than for similar n-propanol solutions. This enhancement appears to be due to an increased contribution arising from dispersion forces, rather than to any significant change in hydrogen-bonding behaviour. The behaviour for dilute fluoroalcohol solutions is characteristic of alcohol systems, but for other compositions is similar to that of fluorocarbon systems. Increase in temperature increases excess enthalpy and entropy but decreases excess free energy. The fluoroalcohol is only partially miscible with carbon tetrachloride, the upper critical solution temperature being 64.5°C.
