Strength Tests on Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

The paper presents tests on square and circular section stainless steel tubes, including stub column and long column tests. The tests focus on the increase in strength resulting from cold-work during the fabrication process. A design procedure is proposed for stainless steel tubular columns based on the tests. It is demonstrated that the proposed design procedure provides column strengths which are much closer to the test strengths than design strengths based on the annealed material properties.
