COMPUTING PRIOR PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR THE INTRINSIC RATE OF INCREASE FOR ATLANTIC TUNA AND BILLFISH USING DEMOGRAPHIC METHODS

SUMMARY We use demographic analysis to compute prior probability distributions for intrinsic rate of increase for eight stocks of Atlantic tuna and billfish (yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, skipjack tuna, albacore, swordfish, white marlin, blue marlin and sailfish). The derived priors are lower than those of previous analyses using similar methods and in some instances markedly lower. We recommend that ICCAT should attempt to resolve the reason for these discrepancies as soon as possible since errors in the computation of priors for r could be a source of serious error in stock assessment results and management recommendations.
