Animated Pedagogical Agents and Emotion

Abstract Animated agents represent a new paradigm for education and training in interactive learning environments, providing a new metaphor for human-computer interaction. This chapter focuses specifically on the role, benefits, and design of animated pedagogical agents in web- and computer-based instruction. It addresses the role of emotion in the design of animated pedagogical agents and its effect in human-agent interactions in a learning environment. The chapter also discusses recent research efforts on the effect of the emotional dimension of animated pedagogical agents on learning, and how the research helps us understand which emotion elements are critical for the design of believable animated pedagogical agents.
