THE PLANNING AND DESIGN OF THE LANTAU FIXED CROSSING

This article describes the planning and design of a system for highway structures and suspension bridges to link Lantau Island, the largest island in Hong Kong territory, with the Hong Kong mainland via the islands of Ma Wan and Tsing Yi. The system will consist of two suspension bridges (one between Lantau and Ma Wan and one between Ma Wan and Tsing Yi) and a series of highway structures and viaducts on Ma Wan and Tsing Yi linking them to the mainland. The deck of each bridge will be a double decker arrangement consisting of four lanes of highway over a covered deck of 2 lanes of highway and 2 rapid transit trains. Construction is due to be completed in 1987.
