Enhancing service resiliency in the next generation EPC system

Failure is unavoidable in any system even in mobile network system. Therefore, failure recovery, i.e., restoring the lost user session as quickly as possible in case of any network node failure, is the most critical task for the mobile network operators. While numerous fail-over mechanisms have been proposed in the past, this paper will introduce a new session restoration procedure for serving gateway (SGW) failure based on the next generation Evolve Packet Core (EPC) architecture where the control and user plane of gateways are separated. By exploiting the split architecture, the proposed method illustrates how the lost user sessions can be restored with minimum restoration time and signaling overheads.
