Abstract A new technique is described for analysing the shape of cloud and precipitation hydrometeors observed with PMS 2D probes. The technique uses simple and easily generated geometric measures of individual hydrometeor images, combined over the observed population of images, to give new measures which can be related to the dominant hydrometeor growth mode, crystal habit and size distribution of the population.
