The research was conducted using secondary source data and primary data collected during targeted interviews with senior HR executives, and a questionnaire surveying 100 key people at civil aviation trade unions and airline management over six months. The impact of the economic crisis has eclipsed that of 9/11, with operating losses for the world’s top 150 airlines in 2008 totalling $15 billion (about £9.5 billion). As a consequence, HR has overseen job reduction initiatives. Aside from compulsory redundancies, other strategies were common, such as recruitment freezes, voluntary redundancies, the non-renewal of temporary contracts, and pay freezes.
