On Beam Aggregation in Millimeter-Wave System

This paper proposes a novel beam aggregation scheme for millimeter wave (mm-Wave) system under hybrid beamforming architecture, assuming one user equipment (UE) equipped with multiple antenna panels receives distinct beams from multiple transmission points (TPs) simultaneously. Further, system framework including channel state information (CSI) feedback scheme and scheduling algorithm is investigated to enable beam aggregation operation. Based on extensive system level simulation results, substantial performance gain for both cell edge users and cell center users can be achieved and the rank of digital precoder can be increased for mm-Wave system with the assistance of beam aggregation. Additionally, the beam aggregation can be easily implemented by independent CSI feedback and scheduler, which can substantially relax stringent requirement on inter-TP communication latency.
