A SYSTEM IS PROPOSED FOR CLASSIFYING LANDSLIDES IN CLAYEY SLOPES; THIS CLASSIFICATION COMPRISES FIVE BASIC TYPES AND SIX COMPLEX FORMS OF MOVEMENT. CLAYS ARE DESCRIBED AS A FUNCTION OF THEIR GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND FORMATION. STRENGTH AND SHEAR PROPERTIES OF CLAYS ARE REVIEWED, AND MENTION IS MADE OF THE POSSIBLE DEVIATIONS BETWEEN IN-SITU STRENGTH AND THAT MEASURED DURING STANDARD LABORATORY TESTS. A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF STANDARD STABILITY ANALYSIS METHODS, AND FOURTEEN REPORTS PRESENTING DATA ON THE FORMATION OF SLOPES IN CLAYEY LAYERS ARE STUDIED IN DETAIL. THERE REMAINS AMPLE ROOM FOR RESEARCH INTO THE QUANTITATIVE STUDY OF MOVEMENTS AND LANDSLIDES IN CLAYEY SLOPES. /TRRL/
